Paula's entrepreneurial leanings motivated her to create The Patents VideoTM. She saw a problem and sought to provide a solution.
As an Intellectual Property Attorney (since 1990) she counseled many companies about the principles set forth in the video. Many times however, her clients sought counseling too late (or they had been told the rules before and had since forgotten them). They had already created their own bar date and had not timely filed a patent application. Sometimes they got mad at the messenger. Paula saw this as an opportunity.
The challenge was to make the key messages in the video memorable. So Paula worked with well-known comedian Pam Stone to make the dry and forgettable subject of patents and their bar dates funny.
This video was produce in 1994. Some patent rules have changed since then, but luckily, the important principles have not. The Video is not dated by the rule changes.
The additional videos on trademark and copyright laws have never been made, which is too bad. Many marketing folks oddly know very little about trademark laws and therefore waste too many dollars on the legal bills. The more business professionals know about the laws that help add value to their companies, the easier it will be for them to execute on these important Intellectual Property principles without a lawyer's charge.
Paula spent ten years working in law firms, then about three years as general counsel for two small corporations. Now she prepares patent applications for major corporate clients via the Internet and telephone from her home in France. She knows as well as anyone about law firm billing practices and how to save a company money by the company having a knowledge base about IP in their ranks. As an aside, Paula recommends every company have their own in-house lawyer for all of the legal needs, even if its only a part-time position.

"I wanted to let you know that I just viewed your video and it was just a total riot and I really enjoyed it. Its just a tremendously entertaining video. And I thought it was quite useful even for our attorneys to view it."
"Last week I showed the Patents Video to about fifty scientists, research and development engineers and research managers and to twelve business people who were interested in a patent basics review. The Patents Video was a hit with all of those who saw it. A great alternative to a dry lecture by an attorney. Generally the humorous approach was appreciated; the early "Oh no! Not a lawyer" comment may have provided the biggest laugh."
